What is Commhex, in several sentences?

Commhex is a website for people who do commission-based work. Unlike an online shop, where you might have several items you sell to customers, commission-based work is customized for individuals. You might agree to draw them a picture, compose them a song, write them a story, or build them a ten-foot-tall statue of wrought iron. Whatever your work is, Commhex helps you to manage these types of jobs.

Is this going to be one of those things where it's cool at first, then everybody starts using it, and then you jack up the fees and make the website suck?

Nope. Commhex does not have venture capital investors or a bunch of employees. We're not running ads on Television and desperately trying to make ever-increasing profits. We are intentionally keeping our scope limited in order to better serve you.

Okay, so how do you guys make money?

Well, right now, we don't! Commhex is in an early beta stage, and as a result, it's completely free to you.

This situation won't last forever, though. Eventually, once the website is ready, we will start charging. Our plan is to offer two kinds of service:

Our Standard Plan will be for users who have an existing commission-based business. Instead of charging you per client or per invoice, we will charge a basic monthly fee, with discounts for year-long subscriptions. We will probably have several tiers of this plan, with different amounts of file storage included. Our current price target is a relatively low fee per month—perhaps $12 to $25. We'll have to see what the common usage patterns are before deciding this.

Our Starter Plan will be designed for people who are just getting started doing commission-based work. Unlike other users, these people may not have regular clients already, or a steady revenue stream. For these users, a monthly fee might be too much to commit to, and they would rather only be charged if they themselves get paid. For this plan, we will simply add a 5% surcharge on top of any invoices.

Anybody who uses the website while it is in beta will get three months of our Standard Plan for free, as a thank you for dealing with any bugs that may occur.

Are my payments secure with Commhex?

Yes! Commhex uses Stripe for all payments-related activity. Your payment information never even touches our servers: you pay with Stripe directly.

Legally, what happens when I use Commhex? Am I working as a contractor for you?

No! This is actually a very important concept: on Commhex, you are the person with a direct billing relationship with your clients. We don't send you a 1099, and you do not work for us in any capacity. You simply use our website to facilitate your own business.

This does mean that you will have to manage any client disputes yourself. Commhex provides tools to make that easy, but you are ultimately the person in control of that relationship, which includes taking full legal liability. We are a facilitator, not a platform.
